Director’s Note - Read this AFTER you’ve seen the show!
The original story of Cinderella has always bothered me in so many ways. I’m clearly not the only one, as I’ve loved just about every new take on Cinderella I’ve ever seen. She’s been remade from the girl who does what she’s told, gets “fairy godmothered” to gorgeous, shows up to the ball winning the Prince’s love with her beauty and ultimately fits into the left-behind glass slipper and says yes to a wedding with the Prince. We get versions now where she’s strong, smart, funny, even defiant! The Prince too is often shown as more than a man who is simply willing to choose a mate by dancing with some ladies at a ball one night. BUT, what bothers me most about the original Cinderella has always been that she says yes to him EVEN THOUGH they spent the entire night together and he never even bothered to ask her name. I mean, I could understand if he didn’t know where to find her after she had to run out, but you didn’t even get her name?? Cinderella, come on, girl. Let’s think this through… I’m really excited and proud of how our cast has come together to write and tell a story of how we imagined the story could have gone instead. :)
